Schroders London Wall, Grigio Perla inspection
November 2nd, 2016 in Quarry Visit, Slab inspection
We have just returned from a short trip to Italy to inspect a mock-up of Grigio Perla for the Schroders fit out at London Wall. The journey for the project team – TP Bennett, Overbury, Schroders – started in Milan and specifically the Grigio Perla quarry visited earlier this year for the same project.
The quarry is located on the shores of Lago D’Iseo and is a picturesque one. Amazing setting and also tranquil due to all the stone now being mined for environmental and safety reasons. Here we showed the project team the extraction process and the factory a few yards away we will use to prepare block and cut the slab. From here we would have to make a 4 hour drive to Firenzuola. This is where the factory was where we plan to produce the tiles and make a dry lay to allow the architect to choose the specific positon of each tile on the floor, then it is numbered and packed with a marked up drawing to go with it. This is important with a stone that has inclusions of just 30mm to 300mm.
In Firenzuola we have access to huge dry lay facilities that means we can dry lay the entire ground and first floor in one inspection and we have the capacity to cut tiles quickly to meet the program. And the two companies have a longstanding relationship with each other and this relationship will always give us all an advantage when trying to deliver a unique but difficult product to the quality we require and within program. Hopefully supply of this project will start early next year so will provide updates as things move on.
